Costa Rica has long been known as one of the world's most preeminent surf destinations. Costa Rica not only has several world-class breaks that will test even the most seasoned surfer, it also has beginner-friendly waves making it a perfect surf holiday for all levels and ages.
The secluded tropical paradise of Playa Santa Teresa, located at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, is undoubtedly one of the most consistent surf spots in the country. There are waves 365 days of the year and various wave breaks to choose from depending on skill level. From beach breaks, points, slabs, reef breaks and a couple of river mouths to choose from, you will definitely find something to your taste. Also for the adventure seeking type, there are plenty of empty waves to explore on the untouched parts of the coastline.
The main surf breaks in town are:
Playa Carmen - Playa Carmen is a sand bottom beach break with a slower wave perfectly suited for both beginner and intermediate surfers. Usually better in mid to high tide this is the perfect spot to improve your surfing skills.
Santa Teresa - Santa Teresa is an open beach break where the waves are usually bigger and hollower than in neighboring beaches. Normally better at low tide when the waves are faster and with more punch. On big swells you will also find a fickle point break on the northern end of the beach that can turn pretty epic on its day. The surf in Santa Teresa is generally more directed to the intermediate to advanced levels.
Playa Hermosa - Long beach at the northern end of Santa Teresa, this place offers perfect conditions for all level of surfers. Whilst the beginners can learn the basics on the inside's gentle and slow rolling waves, the outside offers a variety of punchy peaks with hollow sections for intermediate and advance surfers.
Mal Pais - Multiple setups of point and reef breaks that can handle plenty of swell. If the swell is up make sure to bring your step-up board.
At the hotel we offer board and boogie board rentals and can arrange surf lessons. The lessons are taught by experienced instructors and are around 1.5 hours long. The lesson can be private or semi-private.
